This course presents an overview of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the pumps used in wastewater applications. It presents a method for sizing pumps and pumping systems for typical wastewater treatment plant processes and explains where both rotodynamic and positive displacement pumps are best used. Accessories for WWTP pumps, including materials of construction, mechanical seals and piping plans, motor controls, motors, and motor starting methods are also covered.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the flow path of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the types of pumps used
- Understand WWTP flow diagrams
- Understand and be able to use the Pump Selection Guide Chart for wastewater treatment plant pumps
- Understand how application considerations (altitude, vibration, material pumped, etc.) affect the pump and pumping system requirements
- Understand the various operations in a wastewater treatment plant and the types of pumps typically applied
- Understand how materials of construction and pump seals affect the service life of a WWTP pump
- Understand the considerations that affect the selection of a control system and how to match the level of control to the WWTP application requirements
